We started a dance party at the Obama Rally, and all we got was this lousy picture ;-)

Robin, Nic, and I No, it’s a great picture, it really is.   It was kinda hilarious, Nic and I boozed up a little in celebration of the Obama Rally.   We took the train there, and I was being freakin obnoxious… I mean I was treating it as if it were a baseball game, yelling stuff like “Ron paul is cool, but he ain’t no revolution!” and ” I don’t need an Obama T-Shirt, all I need is my vote!”

we got in, and the place was packed.  It was really great seeing the diversity of St. Louis They were playing soul music and Nic and I wanted to get closer to the speakers.  We stood near the back of the hall behind the press core, where there was a bank of speakers.  We didn’t need to see him, we needed to hear him.  😉

As we were standing there, I was noticing a couple of people around us shimmying around a little bit.  Nic gets a tap on the back and our friend Robin is right there, and we give her a really big hug.  it was definitely a great entourage.  Whenever the three of us show up a place a dance party usually breaks out. 🙂

So the place is pregnant with expectation.  you could feel the excitement.  I was being obnoxious and clapping to the music.  There was a young indian gentleman in front of me doing the same.  Nic, Robin and I are groovin’ too.   There’s a couple of young ladies behind us nodding their heads as well.  I tap the indian gentleman on the shoulder, and guess what happens… Dance Party! It was fantastic, we tried getting as many people through the line as possible.  lots of groovin’ for sure!  We even had an older lady bust out her classic moves.  These two younger twins, joined in the action as well.    We were creating a spectacle but it was great fun!

Then they switched the music up to a slower rock song and we stopped.    I bought everyone some water, because I think we really sweated it out. 🙂

but yes, the speech was good.  I voted for that man into senate and I’ll vote him in again into the White House.  I should have been a cheerleader, I was spouting so many cheers for him:-) Actually, my little sister’s best friend Debra and her mom from chicago found me in the crowd because of all the yelling and clapping I was doing.

but yes, Missouri has picked the wrong president only once in the last century. I’m hoping the 20,000 strong at this rally are a good indication of the vote for Obama.

In case you missed it…

“Good Evening, Everyone,<smile>

My Name is Brian Mita, and I am going to present to you my project for the University City Public Sculpture Project, that I call <Break> “Safety.” <Smile><Break>

“To me, <Next Slide> for a public sculpture to  be successful, I believe that it depends on perception.  Likewise, for Public Safety to be successful, <Break> depends on perception as well.<break>

“<Next Slide>  What I mean by that, is that when you look at a piece of public sculpture, many factors affect your perception of how successful that work is.  <small break.>There is the visual quality of the work, <small break> the underlying message or theme, <small break> as well as <emphasis> the assumptions of the viewer of the work. </ emphasis>

“Now, with public safety, there are a number of factors that contribute to how safe a neighborhood is as well.  There is how nice the buildings look, the police presence in  that neighborhood, the statistical history of that neighborhood, and sometimes… sometimes, how safe a neighborhood is perceived is based on how well lit the neighborhood is.

“So.  For my project, I would like to bridge the gap between Public Art and Public Safety, and build a 6 foot tall fiberglass nightlight, that is powered by a low wattage solar powered LED security light.  <next slide>  I would like to place it next door to where I live, at the Clemens Garden, north of the Delmar Loop.  I did speak with Claire Linzee and get my approval from her and the property owner.  I chose this location because many of the patrons of the Delmar Loop businesses often park here and I think that those patrons would understand that seeing a big night light would let them know that it is a safe area to park in.  Also, because I live in the neighborhood, and I heard that there was mugging in this area over the holiday break, I think that a work like mine would help ease some of the tensions about safety in this area.

“<Next Slide> so in my model….”

That ‘s the part I memorized.  I think the U City Council of Arts and Letters was pretty impressed by the presentation.  It really feels good to have nurtured this idea over the last 6 years, made a couple of adjustments and have a small indication that it might be successful.

I’m crossing my fingers. 😉

Umm, just a little worried

so my friend is taking a big step today to get healthy. In many ways, I’m proud of my friend for this undertaking, but in many ways I’m scared shitless too. Setbacks really suck.

In other news tomorrows a big presentation and I’m not feeling great. Sleep now

the electronic vinyl stacks at kwur.

I just spent five hours alphabetizin the electronic vinyl at the radio station today. That’s about two hours than I wanted to do. I did start to try to match the catalog with the database in discogs.com. I got as far as the c’s, mainly because we have a lot of promo vinyl that’s not even on there. Whether that’s a good or bad thing, I haven’t yet decided.

The idea is that since the database at discogs is already filled out, that the all I have to do is key in a label catalog number and most of my work is done for me. Ideally, I’d like to get a master list, since we’re not getting a huge amonut of vinyl in, If at all, so the collection is pretty stable. That way, if someone is sheepish about browsing through the stack becausethey don’t know the style they are looking for, they can look at the list.

Sadly, after going through the entire library, most of it is trance, which is pretty sad. If there is any house, it’s very mainstream… Probably the reason why not a whole lot of people are liking at the electronic stacks in the first place. It is a bit overwhelming to look at 200 pieces of vinyl and only have some dated, even short reviews of the music with often a mislabeled genre. I mean really, nobody uses jungle to describe dnb anymore. Still, I am pretty interested to hear some of the trip hop vinyl… Something a little more chill you know?

After doing all that, i need to separate the dj mixes and the compilations from the single artist releases in the electronic cd stacks. It’s really confusing for a lot of people Togo through all that, given the postmodernism of the craft. Then I can finally dart doing an email blast of all the important labels out there. Somewhere, I’ll find the time to write up my little summary of how disco begat house and techno, which got sucked in under the title electronica. Since then, it’s reallly changed and the original intent of the master genres have really come back due to it’s less exposed underground nature. So many sub-genres. So little time!

Still, a lot ofthis has to wait, because we’re really hitting it full on in sculpture wth our proposals and models due soon. One week from today I’ll be suited up, giving a presentation on safety. I may draft an intro here.

Still, I spent too much time at the station today. I’m going to head home, pop in the shower and head back to the studio.

Radio show

So, after a few months of not talking, my old friend liz and I hung out again. We caught up a little bit and celebrated dr kings day by throwing him an impromptu dance party on the radio. I’ll have to get a play list, but it was pretty fun going through all the records and being the voice of st louis.

It’s kinda funny though, hanging now feels as if something never happened between us. It was nice, chill. We’re probably going to do another show at sometime, and maybe we’ll amp up the theatrics this time. I think we called it meatpants Inc once 🙂

New roommate, and stuff.

Tina, my sis, moved in today, school starts on Monday, and I centered my online life here, and at my .mac account. That’s http://www.brianmita.com.

It’s cool, Tina got a new car too. It’s a Nissan Versa! Cute, and economical. Lots of value. I should know, not only was I a Nissan salesman, but I’m also the Versa Moderator at the Fresh Alloy Forums. Geek and a half!

Well, anyhow, that’s a mini update. A lot of things have been going on for me, but I’ve been trying to keep them close… maintaining my center and all.

See you in the meatspace!

Oh Jeez!

Sonava! Another blog? crap! Well, yeah, there are a lot of people in my life that are important that can’t read or reply to what I write about my life, so I wanted to try something different than MySpace. I looked into several different Mac software packages, and it seems like this might be the best way to go about it. Still, it’s a bit of a compromise.  Well, now, the big thing is whether or not I can get the old blogs over from there….

ah the new year

This year, I didn’t make any new year’s resolutions. They seem silly now, with 2007 being a relatively good year. Was it difficult? Sure. But I’m here in st louis back at school and in relatively good spot in my life.Lots of things to think about, so give me some time here….
