the electronic vinyl stacks at kwur.

I just spent five hours alphabetizin the electronic vinyl at the radio station today. That’s about two hours than I wanted to do. I did start to try to match the catalog with the database in discogs.com. I got as far as the c’s, mainly because we have a lot of promo vinyl that’s not even on there. Whether that’s a good or bad thing, I haven’t yet decided.

The idea is that since the database at discogs is already filled out, that the all I have to do is key in a label catalog number and most of my work is done for me. Ideally, I’d like to get a master list, since we’re not getting a huge amonut of vinyl in, If at all, so the collection is pretty stable. That way, if someone is sheepish about browsing through the stack becausethey don’t know the style they are looking for, they can look at the list.

Sadly, after going through the entire library, most of it is trance, which is pretty sad. If there is any house, it’s very mainstream… Probably the reason why not a whole lot of people are liking at the electronic stacks in the first place. It is a bit overwhelming to look at 200 pieces of vinyl and only have some dated, even short reviews of the music with often a mislabeled genre. I mean really, nobody uses jungle to describe dnb anymore. Still, I am pretty interested to hear some of the trip hop vinyl… Something a little more chill you know?

After doing all that, i need to separate the dj mixes and the compilations from the single artist releases in the electronic cd stacks. It’s really confusing for a lot of people Togo through all that, given the postmodernism of the craft. Then I can finally dart doing an email blast of all the important labels out there. Somewhere, I’ll find the time to write up my little summary of how disco begat house and techno, which got sucked in under the title electronica. Since then, it’s reallly changed and the original intent of the master genres have really come back due to it’s less exposed underground nature. So many sub-genres. So little time!

Still, a lot ofthis has to wait, because we’re really hitting it full on in sculpture wth our proposals and models due soon. One week from today I’ll be suited up, giving a presentation on safety. I may draft an intro here.

Still, I spent too much time at the station today. I’m going to head home, pop in the shower and head back to the studio.
